⛤ ONMYOJI SKILLS: Douman used to be highly skilled in the Onmyōdō arts while he was alive, to the point where he could easily compete with the legendary Abe no Seimei (though he always lost.) He also "inherited" the latter's powers after killing him, although the actual details to that are still unknown. Known things he can do include: offensive magic, protective magic, the ability to protect himself and others from exorcisms, creating and controlling shikigami and that Douman has a penchant for the darker aspects of the yin yang magic, especially casting and dissolving curses.

Nerfs: Since we don't know too many exact details of what he and Seimei could and couldn't do I'm always good with just saying that his powers failed in this particular case or just were an ill match whenever the need for a nerf crops up.

⛤ DIVINE MAGIC: A special kind of magic that's unique to gods and those somehow connected to them. Douman excels in the "Divine Step" category of it, which is the ability to pass through walls and appear anywhere at will. (It's a running gag that he'll appear behind whoever dares to bad-mouth him to deliver swift punishment, but he also uses it to appear anywhere at school where help or the intervention of a teacher is needed.) It's pretty much only for getting around fast, but Douman also uses it to connect doors for quick travel between far-away places, and to make his Nurarihyon powers look more overwhelming or to grab his opponent's ankles from below right when they try to move during fights.

Nerfs: I can see other characters being able to sense his magical energies somehow and thus be able to get an idea of where he might 'resurface' during a fight, and I'm also good certain places being off-limits or otherwise limiting the places he can connect or travel to with his magic. For instance his own and other characters homes would be alright (with player permission ofc), this random place needed for an event would not. I'm also good with limiting the range he can move around in this during fights since that's how I usually handle it anyway. His natural stamina would be another IC limiter.

⛤ YOUKAI POWERS: The series likes to play pretty fast and loose with these, but it also stays pretty true to the original youkai myths in spirit, so have a link to the wiki entry.

As a Nurarihyon, Douman's youkai abilities center around the idea of being hard to grasp. This shows as the ability to slip in and out of places unnoticed, particularly the homes of other people, and to lure them into just accepting that he has a right to be there or even that he owns a place should he be caught. It can also make him frustratingly hard to hit in a fight with the caveat that he's still weak to attacks that simply hit everything in the area, lucky hits, and anything following the rule of funny since his series IS a comedy manga.

Nerfs: This is yet another Communication is Key one for sure. Usually I like to leave it up to other players how much Douman's Nurarihyon powers can mess with their characters. His weakness to AoE attacks and that he's pretty much toast once he DOES get hit in a fight should be enough nerfs for the rest?

Character Questions:
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon, or who is someone they miss the most and why?

Ashiya Douman doesn't do bonds, maybe never did. That's at least how he'd like it to be.

In truth it's painfully obvious that he *still* hasn't gotten over whatever unhealthy mess of a relationship he had with his rival Abe no Seimei, even 1050 years and one reincarnation after the latter's death through Douman's own hands. And there is also Ranmaru. Their relationship is a like a weird pair of exes (ex-what nobody will ever know), where one refuses to be a silly petty criminal and the other refuses to be anything but. Ranmaru frustrates Douman more often than not, but he also trusts him like no other thanks to their shared past. Their bond goes that deep that you'll usually find one if you find the other, but at the same time it's strained because Ranmaru likes to keep his secrets and play his own games and Douman has long since grown tired of being the collateral without ever getting any explanations. So no, they're not close, and of course he'd never miss that idiot crow.

......Suffice to say, it's not that Douman doesn't do bonds because he doesn't care, but rather that he'll care too much.

2. What are they most afraid of and why?
A repeat of what happened during the last days of his human life. Within 3 days Douman lost everything: everybody who'd mattered to him gone, his old life in shambles, and he himself freshly turned into a youkai and dumped in the wilds like an unwanted pet. Douman hated how willy-nilly everybody else had decided over life and death back then, but most of all he couldn't forgive himself for his inability to make a difference. The absolute helplessness that came with it was his worst nightmare come true, and he is going to do absolutely everything to never let anybody get that sort of power over him again.

3. What are their emotional, mental, and physical weaknesses and why?
Emotional: Douman has the bad habit of not allowing himself to get close to others while also letting their opinion of him get under his skin. He already did it as a human by being too crude, direct and impatient to adhere to any expectations or manners (telling the Emperor to "quit being a sissy or you can wipe your arse alone" in front of the whole court might've been a power move, but it also drove people to take Seimei's jokes about Douman being evil at face value, which in turn pissed Douman off and made him act out worse), and while he got better about it there's still a reason why most just know him as "the Principal".

Mental: Douman is very much a creature of his vices. His dogged obsession with winning might have convinced Suzaku to take a gamble on him and played a role in him turning into a particularly strong youkai, but it also drives him to seek out anybody who has bested him for a rematch over and over again, no matter how many embarassing or painful further losses that'll bring. Even his motivation for everything he did after Seimei's death was pretty much just 'to stick it to Seimei' by realizing that one dream that even Seimei couldn't. His lust for gambling, alcohol and other pleasures offered by the Redlight District are less extreme, but they definitely have gotten him into trouble more than once before.

Physical: Douman's physical specs are pretty much the same as they were back when he was a human, which makes them rather lackluster compared to other ayakashi. He is still a lean kind of fit and kicks like a mule, but without any supernatural physical abilities Douman has to rely on compensating with his wits and skills during a fight. It has also been implied that his Onmyoji powers aren't what they used to be, but it's unknown if that's due to age, a side-effect of becoming a youkai or simply him being less reckless nowadays. Besides that Douman also shares youkais' common weakness against holy or exorcism-style magic.

4. What discrepancies are there between their inner self (who they feel they are) and their outer self (how they present themselves to others)?
The esteemed youkai leader Nurarihyon. Hyakki Academy's Principal. Ashiya Douman, the infamous evil Onmyoji. The psyche of a human who never stopped aging for the last 1070 years, and somebody whose time stopped at 20. All of those contradictional pieces make up Douman, with his mask being a good physical tell of 'who' he currently acts as.

The Principal/Nurarihyon is the person that Douman wants to be. It's a professional face he puts on around most other people because he couldn't just keep acting as he normally does and be a good teacher, nevermind his ill repute among humans, youkai and gods alike. Douman never minded owning who he is (and still doesn't), but having it be used as a reason to target those close to is something that he both minds very much and can't really control. Vanishing off the stage as Ashiya Douman and donning the mantle of the Principal was simply the most practical to realize his ambitions.

As the Principal he often acts like you'd expect of an elderly gentleman of high class; cultured, patient and good-humored, but also able and willing to put his food down whenever needed. A realiable and fairly just leader, who doesn't abuse his powers too much and who advocates social progress based on the ideas of informed co-existence. This all very much fits the symbolism of the Okina Noh mask he wears to a T, and it stands to reason that he probably started wearing it just to remind himself to act this way. ("Donning and doffing the mask" is a very special thing in Noh.) That's the first mask he wears, and it serves as much to protect himself from prejudice as it protects others from Douman's enemies and Douman himself.

When the mask is (quite literally) off, Douman acts much more as himself. This is his private side, that's passionate, crude, playful, an old gambler, a little hot-tempered and a hopeless tsundere who sucks so bad at keeping his heart from his sleeve that it even regularly shows through when he is trying so hard so act as the Principal. This Douman is sly and opportunistic, ruthless, a penny-pincher and sucky old man, a gleeful sadist ...and painfully honest, a crass contrast to his late 'good' rival Abe no Seimei. And he's owning it with a fierce pride that will bite the nose of anybody who thinks he can look down on him for it.

It's also important to note that neither of these 'personas' are exclusive or that one of them is more 'true' than the other. As far as Douman is concerned they are all just different sides of him shown for different occasions and to different people, and there are plenty of times when he will half-remove the mask to act as the-Principal-but-in-private or just to hide his real feelings temporarily while he's in private. In general how much he is willing to show his face is a good tell of how 'true to his emotions' Douman currently is, though.

5. What would make them happiest and why?
There are many things that would make Douman happy: getting (one) over Seimei once and for all. Making those gods of Takamagahara and any others who had once looked down on on him look at him now and weep at their own foolishness. Resolving whatever his story is with the kitsune is, and getting Ranmaru to finally accept his job offer and come back to his side so that they can go back to being happy weird friends again,.......... and how impossible all that is.

Douman is the type who thrives best when there’s victory to hunt, so even though it could be argued that he already reached his goal several times by now, it’ll still never be enough to satisfy him. Which might be just the way he likes.

6. What characteristics does someone need to have to be your character's ideal significant other?
When asked in a bonus page interview, Douman described his ideal partner as a loyal friend, disregarding gender or type of relationship. This answer is typical for him, since it's both the kind of answer he thinks people would want to hear from the principal of Hyakki Academy and actually way more honest than he himself knows. Fact is, Douman is *lonely*.

What he craves is somebody who won't get scared away by his true self with all its loaded history and ugly bits, who won't try to change him, doesn't have any hidden motives and who will get up to All Those Stupid Ideas with him while having his back no matter what in a heartbeat. They'd also have to be able to put up with Douman's strange old mind in a young body dichotomy and be patient (or stubborn) enough to deal with the ghosts of his past that still haunt him, especially Seimei. But most of all they'd need to be able to be a challenge who can keep up with him and match his sadistic freak. .......But since he knows how absurd those asks are he'd also take somebody who's good with keeping things casual and has a nice booty.

7. Would your character make a sacrifice to save someone else and why or why not?
Oh, Douman absolutely would, just not himself in most circumstances. He is a firm believer of putting the right person in the right place, which naturally includes ~~kicking~~ ~~bribing~~ making the ones who can take a beating go take it in place of those who can't. He also regularly buys his usual suspects out of whatever trouble they caused, but in that case it’s only because Douman wants to punish them himself. While Douman is willing to swallow his pride or even wager his school to protect his students and subordinates, he is also an old gambler at heart and won't risk anything precious to him without promising himself an even huger gain - usually in form in swift sadistic punishment for whoever pushed him that far.

8. What is one thing they would tell their younger self if they had the chance, or if your character is young, what is one thing they would want their older self to remember?
"That bastard never ages." - Douman knows that his youthful human self doesn't think much of youkai and would never trust one, so he would think hard and eventually bet on knowing his own vices instead. There is no way Douman can see himself not getting obsessed with Seimei, so tossing the kid something that is just mysterious enough to stay in his memory might eventually be enough to have him hopefully figure out that not everything is as it seems and to keep an eye out in a direction that he himself had been woefully blind at.

9. When in dire circumstances does your character fight, flee, freeze or fawn and how does that look?
Fight! Douman had been on his own even as a little kid, and even back then he had been already glaring daggers at the god statues he was pilfering food offerings from as if daring them to try and punish him. When he met the already adult Seimei or when the giant Shuten Doji attacked the Capital? Fight! When everybody but him was dead and he'd just stopped shaking from somehow surviving a close encounter with the highest gods of Takamagahara? Yell bloody murder, kick an altar and promise to bring them a fight that they'll never forget! And now, that he’s actually big and strong enough to make good on those threats? He might freeze for a second while he’s figuring out a fight plan, and then mercy to whoever decided to pick a fight with him!

10. Why did your character make the wish they did?
His actual wish is "to deny Seimei". Seimei's ability to always accurately predict the future and love to use that to play 5D Chess with everybody else were always the biggest pains in Douman's side, and he is not naive enough to believe that the man's death actually meant an end to his machinations. Add whatever Ranmaru is up to and how other undisclosed forces like the gods and the kitsune are playing their own shady games on top of it, and Douman knows when he is outmatched. But he still wants to protect what he has created (and to kick all those bastards who think they can just play with other people's lives where it hurts), so-- Yes, the ability to counter that by denying the undeniable and twist what should be immovable is alright.

BACKGROUND

Nurarihyon. The venerated Principal of Hyakki Academy, a Youkai who is both respected and feared in the worlds of the supernatural, human and even the divine. He is an old-style leader who values things such as Honor and Integrity, and who has a deep (if not sometimes begrudging) understanding of people and their failings. Unlike the youkai leaders of old he advocates the co-existence between the different kinds of youkai and even between youkai and humans (within reason). But he also acknowledges that a youkai will always be a youkai at the end of the day. After seeking out Haruaki, Abe no Seimei’s descendant and reincarnation, he sets things in motion that not even he could have ever fathomed.

His youkai powers are being slippery and entering other people's houses to drink their tea. If he isn't tending to his school he enjoys visiting the red light district and gambling, particularly the races and pachinko.

While he tries to act gentle and patient to live up to his public face most of the time, there is no real hiding that there is actually a sadist with quite the temper hiding behind the mask. It's not rare to see him dole out prompt, violent and creative punishments whenever the chaos his troublemakers have caused has gone a little too far again. It's an open secret that Nurarihyon won't let anything happen to his subordinates -- anything except himself, that is.

His origins are shrouded in mystery. However, there are persistent rumors that he once was a human who was cursed by the Gods...

His true identity is Ashiya Douman. Once an infamous "evil" Onmyoji and Master of Curses, he used to be the arch-rival and only person who could go toe-to-toe with the famous "good" Onmyoji Abe no Seimei. But their relationship was so much more. In a nutshell, it was complicated. An unhealthy mess of it's complicated. They were rivals, frenemies, notice me senpais,... They competed over literally everything, and Douman always lost to Seimei. This went on for 99 times, before Douman killed Seimei during their 100th match.

...and then he got so upset over Seimei finding a way to not to lose to him during their 100th match (by, y'know, dying during it) that Douman became a youkai just so that he'd live long enough to make Seimei's biggest wish come true in order to stick it to the dude he keeps claiming he hated. By becoming a teacher. And then hiring Seimei's catastrophic reincarnation as the first human teacher for his school for youkai.

The Onmyoji skills shown so far include:

◆ Sensing spirit energy & malicious intent. This seems to have been expanded to get a sense for who's human and who not after being turned into a youkai, maybe as part of an innate predator instinct. It's nowhere as strong as animal youkais' instincts, though.

◆ Curse Master - Seimei liked to call Douman that, poking fun at how Douman excelled especially at casting (and undoing) curses. Basically, he has a penchant for the dark side and destructive forces of the yin yang magic.

◆ Shikigami - The art of forming contracts with spirits or gods and making them do your bidding. Douman seems to dislike using anything that's bigger than briefly animating a simple straw or paper doll to convey messages for himself, but he also managed to prepare everything for a *working* ritual to bind all four of Seimei's main shikigami and enable Haruaki to use them all at once with nothing more than discount coupon flyers, a pair of scissors and a pen marker. (Don't ask, they were pressed for time.)

◆ Exorcizing - Revealing, capturing, sealing, killing or simply hurting supernatural creatures. Douman doesn't even need any spells for this anymore.

◆ Protection Spells - By drawing his signature grid into the air, Douman can protect himself and others against physical and magical attacks, including even Seimei's most potent signature spells. It stands to reason that he can do the more traditional ways of creating and using protective charms as well, though he's clearly more an Offense is the best kind of Defense guy.

◆ Defense against being exorcized - Douman can protect himself and others from exorcism and holy types of magic. There's a limit to how often and for how many he can do it, though, with defending bigger groups repeatedly taking way more out of him than protecting himself once. Touching exorcism magic directly also still burns him.

⛤RANDOM OTHER:

◆ Physical fitness. Douman can hold his own in a physical fight and is frequently seem abusing others in comical ways whenever they piss him off. (Expect him to fight dirty)

◆ Vast pool of spirit energy pool/magical energy

◆ Old Hand at Gambling - Douman is pretty good at recognizing chances and odds and making that work in his favor, especially when it comes to people. i.e. nobody but him ever thought that Izuna, Rintarou or Haruaki would make for good teachers

◆ All the stuff a high-ranked court noble of the Heian period would've been expected to know

SHIPPING PREFERENCES

I generally play Douman as female-leaning pan, with a history of only gunning for women back in his youth/human days, but then eventually just caring less and less as long as the rest fits thanks to there being way too many shapeshifters and other weirdness in youkai society. He's just practical (and greedy) like that. You could say that his type is females/males/shapeshifters. The only exception seems to be foxes, especially Kitsune.

While Youkai Gakkou No Sensei Hajimemashita! is a comedy manga, it also contains some horror elements and can contain elements that might be upsetting to some. Potentially upsetting themes that might come up in relation to Douman, current and past, include:

heavy & highly visual scarring (on his face)
murder
mentions of historical events of wars, natural disasters and genocide
body-horror
gambling & brothels/host clubs (he loves those)*
comedy violence
mentions of fairy tale and myths level of violence
sadistic tendencies

* the manga leaves it open whether they are actual brothels or more of the host club / geisha entertainers variety. Another thing worth mentioning with this case is that the 'sex workers' shown in the series are all seducer-type youkai who have simply switched from targeting their partners lives to targeting their wallets.

I will bring any of those things up only within discretion and when it makes sense in a thread, but if you'd rather not have any of them are mentioned while threading - or if you just don't want to thread in general - then let me know, and I will respect it! backtagging Within reason. General yes forever for psls, as long as I'm still able to remember what the thread was about in memes and 3 weeks in games. Exception for the game rule is if there's been some ooc communication about continuing or if the thread is actively being tagged - just send me a pm or poke me on plurk. WARNING that I'll blacklist anybody who uses me as an AC dispenser. (It's really not as hard to notice as you think.)

other * Douman is a Nurarihyon, a youkai who is notorious for how elusive, slippery and just generally hard to notice or catch it is. As such it can be ridiculously hard to grab or hit him if he doesn't want to.

SHIPPING

I'm good with both M/M and M/F. As long as the chemistry is good, I'll be happy to ship it. Hard no to stuff like non-con, vore and bathroom stuff.

WARNING: Age-gap is something that might come up with him since he is canon-ly 1070 years old, even though his body is forever in its early twenties due to it retaining the look of when he died and was turned into a Yōkai.
